Education

As a 22 year Air Force veteran, most of my academic degrees were awarded from colleges scattered all across the United States, but my most significant degree was from Auburn University, Montgomery.  In December 2001, I received my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, and have subsequently obtained an additional teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education.  I also completed my EDS degree, in Early Childhood, with an emphasis on elementary math, thanks to TEAM Math at Auburn University.

Experience

I began my teaching career late in life, sort of by accident.  I was involved in the Partners in Education program at Maxwell AFB, Gunter Annex.  As members of the community, we volunteered our lunch hours to tutor and assist children in various local schools.  After months of working in Chisholm Elementary, I began to realize just how much fun teaching children could be!  I was always surprised by how excited and motivated the students were when we got together for reading and math lessons.  Those weekly sessions soon became more important to me than programming software, so I enrolled at AUM and started working toward my teaching certificate.  While going to class, I also volunteered as a substitute teacher in surrounding area and soon realized Elmore County deserved it's reputation as an "Education First" community.  Upon graduation, I was fortunate enough to fill in as a Kindergarten teacher at Coosada Elementary and have worked in that capacity for the last seventeen years.  I really look forward to each new class, since each child brings a unique set of challenges, personalities, and even rewards, to my classroom.  I like to keep my students actively involved in our daily lessons and continue to look for new ways to encourage them to develop their new skills. After a fun-filled year, I often find myself looking back and realize that I was the one that learned the most throughout the year, for each student taught me more than any of my college classes! I look forward to working with you and your child during the new school year!
